چکیده

We determine the equilibrium morphology of a strained solid lm for the case where it wets the substrate (Stranski-Krastanow growth). Using a continuum elasticity model with isotropic surface energy and equal elastic constants in the lm and substrate, we calculate an asymptotic solution for the axisymmetric three-dimensional equilibrium shape of a small island, where the height is much less than the width. The elasticity equations are solved using an axisymmetric stress function and a Hankel transform is used to relate the island shape to the stresses. The solution to the resulting integro-diierential eigenvalue problem for the island shape is determined using a Bessel series. We nd that the width of a small three-dimensional island is almost a factor of two larger than the width of a thin two-dimensional island ridge. Our predictions of the island width compare favorably with experimental data in the GeSi/Si system.

Dislocation Energetics in Epitaxial Strained Islands

We calculate (to rst order in the Burgers vector) the energy of introducing dislocations into Stranski-Krastanow islands having equilibrium shape. These results suggest that misst dislocations of diierent Burgers vector tend to segregate spatially within the islands, which may aaect the mosaic structure of lms formed by island coalescence.

Equilibrium island ridge arrays in strained solid films

The equilibrium shape and chemical potential of an array of island ridges in an epitaxially strained solid film are determined from a continuum model describing the Stranski–Krastonow morphology of a thin layer on a substrate. This model incorporates the conditions for mechanical and chemical equilibrium, isotropic surface energy, and misfit strain. Solutions corresponding to periodic arrays of...

Equilibrium shape and size of supported heteroepitaxial nanoislands

We study the equilibrium shape, shape transitions and optimal size of strained heteroepitaxial nanoislands with a two-dimensional atomistic model using simply adjustable interatomic pair potentials. We map out the global phase diagram as a function of substrate-adsorbate misfit and interaction. This phase diagram reveals all the phases corresponding to different well-known growth modes. In part...

Coherent Stranski-Krastanov growth in 1¿1 dimensions with anharmonic interactions: An equilibrium study

The formation of coherently strained three-dimensional ~3D! islands on top of the wetting layer in the Stranski-Krastanov mode of growth is considered in a model in 1 1 1 dimensions accounting for the anharmonicity and nonconvexity of the real interatomic forces. It is shown that coherent 3D islands can be expected to form in compressed rather than expanded overlayers beyond a critical lattice ...

Equilibrium theory of the Stranski-Krastanov epitaxial morpholow

We present a theory of the equilibrium morphology adopted by N atoms of one material when they crystallize epitaxially onto the surface of a dissimilar material. The discussion is limited to the case of the so-called Stranski-Krastanov morphology where a strongly bound but elastically strained wetting layer coats the substrate. The arrangement of atoms atop this layer is determined by minimizin...
